Because of its dense population, Manhattan is known not only for being the country’s center of trade, but also for having extremely busy and dangerous roads. This area is so notorious that a lot of New Yorkers consider it one of the top fatal accident spots in the state. The reason behind this is the countless vehicular crashes, hit-and-run accidents and other road accidents that have brought harm to local residents over the years.
In Williamsburg, there was a recent accident involving a middle school teacher who was struck and killed just a few blocks from his apartment. According to reports, a NYPD officer who was making a left turn struck the teacher. Both the driver and pedestrian had the green light, but the officer driving the van did not yield to the pedestrian. As a result, the teacher was knocked over and his head hit the pavement. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Some eyewitnesses said that the officer was talking on her cell phone when the accident occurred. People from Internal Affairs asked the officer to hand over the phone, but she refused. It is still unknown if the officer has been charged or disciplined. She was not on duty at the time of the accident.
Many accidents are caused by negligence on the part of the other driver. A lot of local residents have been injured or died in accidents and their families are left in distress, both emotionally and financially.
In a problematic situation like this, it may be possible for the surviving family members of an accident victim to exercise their rights and seek justice for the loved one. They may be eligible to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the negligent party. By gathering vital information from the crash scene and using the evidence to prove the negligent behavior of the other party, the surviving family members of the deceased may be able to receive the compensation that is rightfully deserved.
