What Are Allergan Textured Breast Implants?
Allergan, Inc.’s breast implants include silicone-filled breast implants and saline implants. Many women undergoing breast implant surgery chose textured breast implants. The manufacturer claims the textured implants stay in place because the texture allows tissue to grow into the surface of the implanted device.
The company also manufactures Natrelle 133 tissue expanders and Natrelle 133 plus tissue expanders used in reconstruction surgery.
On June 24, 2019, the FDA published a News Release stating it had requested Allergan issue a recall of specific modes of its textured breast implants. Allergan notified the FDA that it would issue an international recall of specific types of Natrelle saline and silicone breast implants and tissue expanders.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Safety Communication that was updated on June 1, 2020. The communication referred to reports of BIA-ALCL and BIA-ALCL-related deaths associated with BIOCELL textured breast implants. BIA-ALCL is an abbreviation for breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma.
The FDA noted 573 reports throughout the world of BIA-ALCL cases, including 481 cases involving Allergan breast implants. In 12 cases involving patient death, the patients had Allergan breast implants at the time of their BIA-ALCL diagnosis. The FDA warned that the risk of BIA-ALCL was six times higher with Allergan breast implants compared to textured implants from other manufacturers.
What Are the Symptoms of BIA-ALCL?
According to the FDA, BIA-ALCL is a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. It is not breast cancer. The cancer is found in scar tissue and fluid buildup near the implant, but it can spread throughout the body in some cases.
Symptoms and warning signs of BIA-ALCL include:
- Skin irritation
- Pain near the breast implants
- Swelling near the breast implants
- Presence of a mass or capsular contracture near the breast implants
