People are seriously injured in car accidents every day. In 2018, 943 people were killed in New York state car accidents, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation. That’s almost three people per day.
Many of these accidents are entirely preventable. At Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, P.C., our personal injury lawyers believe understanding the New York City car accident statistics is an important step to keeping people safe on the roads.

June 2020 New York Car Accident Statistics
According to the New York Police Department, there were 7,456 motor vehicle accidents in June 2020 alone–at a time when the entire city remained largely shut down in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Regardless of the shutdown, 2,644 people were injured or killed in traffic accidents in a single month. Bicyclists and pedestrians were far more likely to be injured, as illustrated by the following statistics:
- 1,581 motorists were injured, out of 14,690 motorists involved in crashes
- 951 vehicle passengers were injured, out of 956 passengers involved
- 580 bicyclists were injured, out of 581 bicyclists involved in accidents
- 399 pedestrians were injured, out of 408 pedestrians involved in accidents
By way of comparison, when the city was operating normally in June 2019, the NYPD reported 19,356 motor vehicle accidents citywide. 4,180 of those crashes caused injuries or fatalities.
These statistics are startling. They also show that driver negligence causes most NYC car accidents whether the city is bustling or relatively quiet. The primary causes of New York City car accidents in both June 2020 and June 2019 were distracted driving and “following too closely”.
Leading Causes of NYC Car Accidents
NYPD data provides a monthly statistical analysis of the most common causes of NYC car accidents. Some of the common causes of NYC car accidents for June 2020 include:
- Driver distraction (2,127 crashes)
- Following too closely (577 crashes)
- Failure to yield the right of way (484 crashes)
- Improper passing or lane usage (311 crashes)
- Speeding (293 crashes)
- Drunk driving or illegal drug use (138 crashes)
In June 2019, the highest number of accidents (6,245) involved driver distraction and 2,226 accidents involved following too closely (tailgating).
NYPD attributes only a handful of auto accidents to cell phone use each month. However, it’s likely that the use of smartphones and other devices contributes significantly to “driver distraction” as the leading cause of accidents.
If you were hurt in a crash, it is important to understand that New York is a no-fault insurance state. That means your own car insurance policy reimburses you for medical bills and damage even if someone else caused the accident. Unfortunately, most NYC car insurance policies have limits in place so that your own insurance is unlikely to cover the full cost of a serious injury.
Common Car Accident Injuries
Preliminary reports for 2019 show that 42,446 NYC car accidents resulted in personal injuries that were reported to law enforcement officials.
That statistic includes accidents in Kings County, Bronx County, New York County, Queens County and Richmond County. 2,575 of those injuries were classified as “serious”–and nearly 5,000 more were classified as moderately serious.
Victims of serious car accidents in New York City often sustain:
- Brain injuries
- Spinal cord damage
- Serious head and neck injuries
- Broken bones
- Burn injuries
- Nerve damage
- Soft tissue injuries
- Organ damage
- Chest injuries
- Catastrophic injuries
- Wrongful death
While NYC car accident victims most commonly suffered only minor injuries in 2019, even minor injuries can be expensive to treat. Whiplash, for example, is commonly classified as a minor injury at the time of the accident. Unfortunately, whiplash injuries tend to progress over time and can impact your life for months or years.
Whether your injuries are classified as serious, moderate or minor for statistical purposes, you may have the right to financial compensation. When someone else’s negligence caused your accident, New York law gives you the right to hold them responsible–especially if your own car insurance is insufficient to cover the damages.
At Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, P.C., our personal injury attorneys are here to help. If you have questions about your rights after a NYC motor vehicle collision, call our law firm to schedule a free consultation today.
Fatality Rate for New York City Car Accidents in 2019
The New York Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research has released preliminary data for 2019 car accident fatality rates. Over 200 people died in fatal accidents in 2019.
Unfortunately, the fatality rate increased dramatically when the crash did not involve two motor vehicles. Bicyclists, pedestrians and even motorcyclists are always more vulnerable to the most serious car crash injuries.
According to the 2019 data:
- 118 fatalities involved pedestrian/motor vehicle crashes
- 25 fatalities involved bicycle/motor vehicle crashes
- 23 fatalities were motorcycle crash victims
While helmet use and other safety precautions can greatly reduce the risk of fatalities for bicyclists and motorcyclists, the risk of serious injury and death remains.
If you lost your loved one in a NYC car accident, our lawyers can help you pursue your right to compensation for wrongful death. You may have the right to get compensation for your loved one’s medical bills, funeral and burial costs. Wrongful death damages also include compensation for your loss more generally, such as:
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional trauma
- Loss of consortium
- Loss of your loved one’s financial support

Statute of Limitations to File a NYC Car Accident Claim
Under New York law, you have three years to file a personal injury claim and two years to file an action for wrongful death. These deadlines are important. If you wait longer, you can lose your right to any compensation for your injuries.
While most cases don’t end up in court, your lawyer needs time to prepare your insurance claim. A strong insurance claim is based upon strong evidence–and the more quickly we can get that evidence, the better.
If you aren’t sure what to do after an accident, it doesn’t hurt to speak with an experienced car accident lawyer. At Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, P.C., our lawyers offer a free case review for every client, so schedule yours today.

If you’re hurt and someone else caused the accident, you have the right to be compensated for all of your expenses. You also have the right to be compensated for more subjective losses, like pain and inconvenience.
