When a loved one is hurt, it is always a distressing experience. If you are fortunate, it will be something minor that heals quickly, but sadly this is not always the case. Head injuries, in particular, can have life-changing consequences. The brain is very delicate and any form of head trauma can result in permanent damage, affecting movement, memory or any number of other basic functions.

One such incident occurred at a New York zoo in 2010. What should have been a family day out for two parents and their baby girl ended in tragedy. The mother was holding her 6-month-old daughter when she was struck by a branch from a 50-year-old tree. The 18-inch-thick branch severely injured her and killed her baby daughter.

The 39-year-old woman suffered extensive injuries, including fractures to her face, teeth and skull. Her optic nerve was damaged and she suffered a traumatic brain injury. The accident is also reported to have caused her some loss of memory.

The couple have filed a $50 million lawsuit relating to their daughter’s death. The suit suggests that the honey locust from which the branch fell was poorly maintained. It is a sad fact that many families suffer such horrifying losses as the result of preventable accidents. On top of her bereavement, this mother might suffer long-term effects from her brain injury.

The extent of the damage caused by such accidents does not always present itself immediately, so if you suffer a head injury it is important to seek medical attention. You may also wish to seek compensation as this couple has done. An attorney can advise you on your options and support you if you decide to pursue a claim.
