Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a very serious matter. No doubt, many Manhattan readers are familiar with the often-debilitating effects of brain injury. Some of these injuries escalate into worse medical conditions or complications.

In fact, a recent report indicates that brain injury victims may have more to be alarmed than long-term headaches, dizziness or concentration problems. A study from the University of Michigan found that the risk of ischemic stroke ascends after a TBI.

The researchers explained that concussions may cause the brain to have abnormal clotting or blood vessel damage, which could disrupt blood flow to the TBI victim’s brain, even after the initial symptoms of brain injury have gone away. When the study’s results were translated into statistics, it indicated that suffering a TBI raised the risk of stroke by 31 percent, making traumatic brain injury as strong a stroke risk predictor as hypertension. This is quite alarming, considering that 1.7 million Americans sustain TBIs annually.

Earlier findings about concussions link brain injuries with gradual development of cognitive conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease. With the significant correlation of TBI to the possibility of stroke, there is now further proof of how TBI can wreck a person’s body and, ultimately, one’s life. Brain injury victims may suffer financially due to the cost of treatments, medications needed for the long-term effects and complications of a TBI.

People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury are advised to act quickly and seek an effective solution. A legal professional will understand the situation, is knowledgeable of relevant legal issues, and may help a victim to be compensated for their life-altering traumatic injuries.
