Due to the sheer number of people and cars on the road, tragic accidents happen frequently in New York City. Yet, each fatal accident is a reason to pause, remember the victims and consider the safety of our roads and the drivers who frequent them.

A recent accident took the lives of four people, including a pregnant girl and her baby. The car accident happened on the Major Deegan Expressway on Feb. 2 around 12:15 a.m. According to a news source, the driver of the car lost control when he was changing lanes on the Expressway, causing him to strike a cement pillar.

Two other people were injured in the crash. They were taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and first listed in critical condition.

The cause of this fatal Bronx accident is still unclear. Investigators have said there is no evidence of drunk driving or other criminal conduct, but speed may have been an issue.

In a 2009 New York Times article, a major trade association listed the Major Deegan Expressway as one of the ten worst roads in New York City. That report looked at deteriorating conditions on New York’s roads and bridges, such as uneven pavement and falling concrete.

When a family loses a loved one in a fatal accident, they may be able to file a wrongful death claim to recover compensation for medical bills, funeral expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering, and other damages. A New York personal injury attorney can help determine who is liable for the accident and what sources of insurance are available to pay for it.
