Car accidents happen every day in New York City and beyond, but that doesn’t make them any less serious. People can suffer injuries that affect them for the rest of their lives. In some cases, victims may be awarded compensation for the injuries they suffered as a result of another person’s negligence. That was the case for one woman who was involved in a car accident with a well-known football player.

The accident happened in May 2008. According to reports, Plaxico Burress, a wide receiver for the New York Jets, was driving his $140,000 Mercedes-Benz when he rear-ended a 27-year-old woman. The accident was serious enough to cause the woman to suffer back and neck injuries.

The woman filed a lawsuit against the football player a few months after the accident. However, just recently, she was awarded $125,000 along with interest for damages, lost wages and medical bills.

This isn’t the only trouble the football player has been in recently. In July, Burress was released from jail after serving 20 months for weapons possession. In addition, reports indicate that the insurance on the football player’s car had been terminated three days prior to the accident.

When drivers are reckless, they should be held accountable for their actions. Cars are not toys, and drivers must be careful. When drivers are inattentive or overly aggressive, accidents happen.

When people are involved in car accidents in New York or elsewhere, they may wish to work with an experienced personal injury attorney. An attorney can investigate the facts, and help people claim the compensation they deserve.
