This past Sunday a Train accident involving a New York City bound Metro North train derailed near Spuyten Duyvil in the Bronx killing four people and injuring more than 60 others, 11 critically. The cause of the seven car derailment is still unclear but there have been many witness statements stating that excessive speed was a factor.
We now know that the black box recorder has been found and the data will be analyzed hopefully leading to a specific cause of this tragic train accident. The train’s engineer, a twenty year veteran, said that he hit the brakes as the train approached the turn. Some passengers stated that the train seemed to be approaching the turn too fast. The speed limit at the turn is 30 mph, but the stretch of track before it has a 70 mph speed limit. According to investigators, the black box should be able to tell how fast the train was actually traveling and if the brakes failed. It is unknown how long it will take to get the results of the black box review. Governor Cuomo commented on the accident and has stated “It’s not about the turn. I think it’s going to turn out to be about the speed more than anything and the operator’s operation of the train at that time.”
