Asbestos can be found in many places, much to the chagrin of New York workers. This substance can have a severe effect on a person’s health, so it’s important to understand what it can do and where it can potentially be found.
Healthline lists out the symptoms of asbestosis, the disease that occurs due to asbestos exposure. They include:
- Chest pain
- Loss of appetite
- Clubbing of fingers or nail deformities
- Tightness in chest
- Trouble breathing
- Dry cough that won’t go away
It’s also important to note that these symptoms generally occur around 20 years after a person’s initial exposure to asbestos. This means that someone could potentially be out of the workplace by the time their symptoms begin. Once a person has asbestosis, it also can’t be cured. Symptoms can be managed for relief.

In the workplace, it can be in caulking, boiler insulation, soundproofing or acoustic materials, packing materials, spackling products, laboratory gloves, and fire curtains or blankets. Certain housing structures can also contain asbestos within the construction materials. It’s particularly easy to find in siding, roof shingles, vinyl flooring, and the coating around hot water pipes. In general, “heat technology” should be looked at carefully since asbestos is a common ingredient. Earlier models of buildings could have it in the insulation or paint, as well.
Asbestosis is a seriously debilitating disease. Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos at the workplace is at risk of developing asbestosis. It’s advisable to keep an eye out for potential symptoms and to document cases of exposure.
