New York residents who must use wheelchairs when getting around the city may understandably feel a sense of vulnerability when near cars, trucks or other vehicles as they may be limited in their ability to avoid being hit more so than a person on foot might be. Every pedestrian whether on foot or on wheels deserves to know that they are safe yet sadly this is not always the reality as too many drivers make reckless choices that put innocent people in harm’s way.
An example of this can be seen in a recent incident on Coney Island on a weekday morning. A woman with multiple sclerosis had reportedly taken some children to a school bus stop when she was struck by a man in a sport utility vehicle. As a result of the impact, the woman was ejected from her wheelchair and is said to have experienced multiple scrapes and bruises.
The driver is 42 years old and works for the New York City Housing Authority. Reports indicate he was under the influence of both alcohol and marijuana. He has been placed under arrest for drunk and drugged driving and has also been charged with possession of pot.
