Going for surgery can be a daunting experience, whether it is for a minor operation or a life-saving one. For patients in New York, having an experienced doctor for the procedure might ease your mind. Unfortunately, even the best surgeons are capable of making a surgical error, and when this happens it is the patient who pays the consequences.

For one man in Texas, this became a terrifying reality when his surgeon informed him of a critical mistake in his operation. The 55-year-old patient was expecting to have a cancerous kidney removed. It initially appeared to have gone well, but he was soon confronted with devastating news. The doctor informed him that the kidney that had been removed had not been the cancerous one, but the healthy one.

Another doctor was able to remove the cancerous portion of his remaining kidney, but he must wait four more years before he can be placed on a transplant list. He lives in hope that he is able to have the procedure completed before the cancer can make a return. In the meantime, his only recourse is to make provisions for the future, to ensure his family is taken care of.

With this in mind, he has filed a lawsuit against the surgeon responsible for the procedure. He has also sued the radiologist said to have incorrectly read his X-ray. He hopes that any money gained from it will help his family survive if anything should happen to him.

He may live in another state, but residents of New York can learn from his situation. Medical negligence can do a huge amount of damage and should not be tolerated. Confronting those responsible is often the best way to ensure it doesn’t happen again to anyone else. Furthermore, an attorney may be able to help you sort through the details and help you work toward being fairly compensated.
