Ride safe in any weather with these 5 tips

Whether you ride motorcycle, bike or scooter, you’re probably ready to get out on the road this summer. But, before you go it’s important to have the right gear for the weather.

Here are a few tips to prepare for outdoor riding.

1. Carry rain gear

Even if the forecast is clear, it’s a good idea to always pack rain gear before heading out for a ride. Any material made out of polyester should keep you dry in wet weather. Remember to pack riding gloves, a pair of pants, a jacket and waterproof boots or boot covers.

Traveling at fast speeds in the cold and rain while unprotected could cause you to get sick or become fatigued, leaving you more susceptible to an accident.

2. Cover up

On days where the sun is shining, and the weather is hot, you may not like the idea of wearing long pants and a jacket. But, staying covered up can help prevent abrasions if an accident occurs. You can also protect your skin by remembering to wear sunscreen!

Although leather is a very durable fabric, it can get hot. Too much heat can also be hazardous to riders. Try wearing new mesh materials that are designed to help you stay cool and protected while riding on hot days.

3. Wear layers

Conversely, sometimes a day that starts out warm can get chilly once the sun goes down. Dressing in layers can not only add protection, but it also offers you flexibility if the weather gets warmer or cooler.

If you aren’t ready to wear the extra layers when you head out, you may also consider keeping a change of clothes handy in case you get cold or your clothes get wet.

4. Eye protection

Unless your vehicle is equipped with a windshield, you must wear eye protection by law in the state of New York while riding a motorcycle. However, it’s a good idea to wear eye protection to ride bicycles or scooters too. Eye protection will prevent debris from the road or bugs from interfering with your view of the road ahead.

In certain conditions, eye protection might also lessen other hazards, such as sun glare. Just make sure you have clear eye protection to wear at night and sunglasses or tinted eye protection for when it’s bright.

5. Keep your energy up

Controlling a motorcycle, bicycle or scooter takes endurance. Especially during hot or cold weather, it’s important to make sure you keep up your energy during this workout. Stay hydrated with water or a beverage with electrolytes. You should also pack snacks that are high in nutritional value, like fruit or energy bars.
