Medical errors the nation’s third-most common cause of death

When you show up to a New York hospital or physician’s office, chances are, you feel confident in the quality of care you will receive while there and have faith that your doctor will direct you down the right path. Regrettably, however, doctors, like everyone else, are not immune to making errors, but the errors physicians make can have serious, and even potentially fatal, consequences. At Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, P.C., we understand that doctor errors have the potential to upend many areas of your life, and we have helped many people who experienced hardships due to medical mistakes pursue recourse.

According to CNBC, medical errors are alarmingly common across the United States, meaning they happen far more frequently than you might want to think. In fact, medical errors have become so common across the nation that they now trail only behind cancer and heart disease in terms of the top causes of death among Americans.

According to the results of one recent study, medical mistakes kill approximately 250,000 people each year in this country. However, some research suggests that this is not an accurate figure and that the true number of Americans losing their lives annually due to medical mistakes is closer to 440,000. Why the disparity?

Typically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the entity responsible for collecting information about American deaths, gets its information about causes of death from coroners, medical examiners and funeral directors. However, these professionals do not typically note when system failures or doctor mistakes contribute to someone’s death, which is something the CDC is trying to change.
