Uber is facing one of its toughest challenges, filing for permits in California and San Francisco roads. Uber conquered the taxi business, develop self-driven cars and launched them in Pittsburgh, and cowed city governments all over the world. But it seems the hippie capital of the world is stumping Uber with its bike lanes and permit rules.
California regulators threatened unspecified legal actions if Uber did not file for autonomous car permits. California permits the operation of self-driven cars but every vehicle must be registered, and the company must apply for permits. Uber, thus far, is refusing to submit the paperwork and obtain the permits.
Additionally, Uber’s autonomous algorithms seemed stumped by San Francisco roads. Uber’s cars operated, largely without incident, in downtown Pittsburgh for months. But numerous videos have surfaced of alleged Uber self-driven cars that are violating traffic laws, including running red lights.
Furthermore, it seems that Uber cars are unable to navigate bike lanes. Most states require cars to merge into bike lanes before executing right turns. The early merger allows cyclists to adjust around the car and gives the driver plenty of time and space to see cyclists. Uber cars are not obeying the bike lane merger rule. In fact, numerous reports detail that Uber self-driven cars execute “right hook” turns into bike lanes. The right-hook turn is the standard right turn and, concerning bike lanes; it endangers the lives of cyclists.
