A contusion may be as serious as a concussion

It is no secret that the brain is an exceedingly delicate organ. Unfortunately, every year in New York, countless individuals suffer injuries to their heads that result in long-term damage to their brains. No matter how small the impact may initially seem, if you hit your head, it is always advisable to seek immediate medical attention. The faster a brain injury is identified, the greater the chance that it may be possible for physicians to treat it and limit the damage sustained.

Most people are aware of the potential dangers of concussions. These injuries, caused by direct impact to an individual's head, can have numerous serious consequences, some of which can take weeks or longer to manifest. Some of the warning signs include dizziness, nausea, loss of consciousness or any other cognitive impairment. If such symptoms develop, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Another form of brain injury about which many people are less aware are contusions. These are very similar to concussions, as this article on TBIs explains. However, the thing that identifies a brain injury as a contusion is the presence of a localized bleed. This is understandably dangerous and can have fatal consequences if any resultant clots are not removed.

Coming to terms with the reality of a brain injury can be difficult and you may not know where to turn. However, you do not need to go through this difficult experience alone. An attorney may be able to advise you on the steps you can take to secure an insurance payout for your injuries. He or she may also be able to assist you with a compensation claim if your injury was the result of someone else's negligence.
