It is alarming to think about how much we rely on the diligence and responsibility of other people in our day-to-day lives. Your personal safety and that of your loved ones depends heavily on the people around you. A distracted driver, an inattentive caregiver, a negligent doctor or any number of other individuals could cause serious injuries or even a fatal accident. In New York, a grieving mother has filed a lawsuit following the death of her son last October.
Her son was 14 years old when he left his school in Long Island City. The autistic teenager was not found until three months later, when his body turned up on a beach in Queens. The cause of death is still under investigation. His mother is now seeking damage from several parties in a wrongful death suit on the grounds that her son should not have been able to get out of the facility.
The lawsuit, which targets several people from the school, the NYPD, the Department of Education and the city itself, does not state the amount sought. However, the teenager's mother is said to be seeking $25 million. Of course, this can do nothing to make up for the loss of her son. Even so, in cases like this, it is vital that those responsible are confronted so that their negligence cannot cause harm to anyone else.
The loss of a loved one is never easy to cope with and other families in New York can surely sympathize with this mother's fight for justice. If you have lost someone because somebody else failed in her or his responsibilities, you may be keen to seek answers. An attorney could be of use in pursuing those answers and may also be able to help you seek compensation for your loss.
