Clinical trial tests Progesterone to treat severe TBIs

A TBI (traumatic brain injury) is a severe injury to the brain. It is defined by major damage to a person's brain that can result in decline in memory, cognitive function and neurological operations. Severe TBIs can substantially reduce the future well-being of the victim and even leave them dependent on outside care and machines. As such, many doctors are devoted to finding ways to treat victims of TBIs and to help them regain full function of their brains.

One clinical trial studied the effectiveness of progesterone as a treatment for victims of severe TBIs. The clinical trial included about 1,100 people divided equally into test and control groups. Progesterone is widely associated with birth control, as a hormone that helps to prevent pregnancies. But it has also been shown in animal trials to inhibit inflammation of cytokines, prevents of excitotoxicity, reduction of apoptosis, and other benefits.

It was hoped that a clinical trial would show similar benefits in humans. Sadly, the researchers did not find any statistically significant differences between the control group and the test group. The control group that received the placebo did not develop any noticeable changes or benefits that were substantially dissimilar from the group that received the treatment.

While discouraging, the researchers emphasize that progesterone could still show promise as part of a battery of treatments. They emphasize that TBIs are complex injuries that no one fully understands. The brain fails due to a cascade of reinforcing issues and it is unlikely that a mono-treatment (i.e. one method of treatment) would be sufficient to reduce the damage from a TBI. The researchers plan on testing progesterone as part of a battery treatment.

Until science can fully restore cognitive function after a brain injury, victims are left with imperfect tools to provide for their future. The medical expenses and long-term care for severe traumatic brain injuries can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. If a loved one suffered a TBI due to the negligent actions of another, you may want to contact a lawyer for assistance. You will need help from an attorney to secure a fair settlement to care for your loved one into the future.
