Ford door latch recall expands

Ford Motor Company continues to be dogged by recalls regarding a defective door latch to its Lincoln model vehicles. At the request of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or NHTSA, Ford agreed to expand the recall notice from its 2013-2015 Ford C-Max and Ford Escape, 2015 Ford Mustang, Lincoln MKC, 2014-2016 Ford Transit Connect, and 2012-2015 Ford Focus. The recall now affects around 2,383,292 vehicles sold throughout North America.

So far, Ford has identified 2,046,297 vehicles sold in the United States, 233,034 sold in Canada, and 61,363 sold in Mexico. Anyone who owns one of the above-listed models is encouraged to take their vehicle to the nearest Ford dealer for repairs.

The recall notice was ordered after discovering a pawl spring tab in one of the side door latches could break which would prevent the door from latching. According to Ford, if the door is unable to latch, it could open during transit. So far, Ford has identified three injuries and one accident linked to the defect. Ford dealers will replace the latches at no cost. The dealers may apply to Ford for reimbursement of their expenses.

Product recalls can be voluntary, like this one, or they can be mandatory. Mandatory recalls are only issued when the company in question refuses to address the dangers proactively. Luckily, Ford appears to be cooperating with federal regulators to address all safety concerns.

If you were injured due to a defective auto part, then you may want to speak to an attorney. A lawyer can guide you through a products liability case to ensure that you understand the entire process before you sign up for a case. The best lawyers are the ones that involve you in the process.
