East Village Manhattan Building Collapse

Today, Thursday March 26, 2015, an explosion occurred in Manhattan's East Village in what officials called a possible building collapse in the area of East 7th and 2nd Avenue. The first two floors of a red-brick building at the scene appear to have crumbled. Flames were engulfing two buildings at the scene and firefighters were spraying water on the blaze. Clouds of black smoke were rising from the building, which includes both apartments and businesses. The destruction near the corner of Second Avenue and East Seventh Street was reported shortly before 3:30 p.m. In addition to 121 Second Ave., the building next door at 123 Second Ave., was also on fire. As many as 30 people were hurt according to law-enforcement sources.

Building collapses are generally preventable accidents that result due to design, construction or maintenance defects. Unfortunately, building collapses are usually catastrophic incidents that result in serious injuries, paralysis or death. Victims of building collapses may be entitled to compensation under a theory of premises liability, which obligates property owners, architects and engineers to provide safe buildings and structures.

Building collapses involve complex legal issues and a close examination of architectural and engineering standards. The New York premises liability attorneys at Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, PC are familiar with premises liability and personal injury laws. If you or a loved one has been injured in the East Village Building Collapse accident, the New York personal injury attorneys at Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, PC can help you pursue a personal injury or wrongful death claim.
