How do you know if you have a concussion?

It can be all too easy to dismiss an injury as minor and harmless. However, when that injury is a blow to the head, it should not be ignored. Brain injuries can have long-term effects with life-changing consequences which may be even more severe if left untreated. In a previous post, we looked at the options available in the wake of a brain injury, but how can you tell if you have been affected by one?

One of the more common forms a head injury can take is concussion. Many people are fortunate enough to make a fast recovery and be able to get on with their lives. Others, however, could face a recovery period that takes months or even years. It is important to be able to identify the signs so you can seek treatment as quickly as possible.

  • Difficulty focusing or concentrating.
  • Struggling to process information.
  • Blurred vision or sensitivity to light.
  • Headaches or dizziness.
  • Numbness or weakness.
  • Vomiting or nausea.
  • Problems with coordination or balance.
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping excessively.
  • Seizures or convulsions.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website goes into this in greater detail. However, the important thing to remember if these signs become apparent and you suspect a concussion is to seek immediate medical attention.

Another matter you might consider if your head injury was caused by someone else's negligence or irresponsible action is pursuing compensation. An attorney can help you establish whether you have a case and assist you in seeking justice for your injuries.
