Erb's palsy is the more common term for a birth injury known medically as brachial plexus injury, or paralysis of the baby's shoulder, arm and hand when the brachial plexus nerves are pinched as the baby travels through the birth canal during delivery.

Symptoms of Erb's palsy may be immediately observed within minutes after birth and can include:
- Paralyzed arm or shoulder
- Difficulty with muscle control of the arm
- Arm numbness, limp arm and no response to nerve stimulus
- Inability to sit up or crawl
- Loss of dexterity in affected arm and shoulder
Symptoms may be permanent. Surgery may be effective in repairing nerve damage and restore feeling and motor control to the affected arm, hand and shoulder.
Shoulder Dystocia Often Results in Erb's Palsy
One of the most common causes of Erb's palsy is an awkward positioning of the head and neck in the birth canal known as shoulder dystocia. Shoulder dystocia occurs when a baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pelvic bone during delivery. Medical precautions should be immediately taken to prevent Erb's palsy and failure to do so by medical professionals may result in negligence. Erb's palsy may also result when an obstetrician applies excessive pressure during delivery, causing stretching and tearing of the nerves in the brachial plexus.
In most cases, Erb's palsy is preventable, resulting from negligence on the part of the physician during delivery. If your baby suffered shoulder dystocia during delivery, and/or has been diagnosed with Erb's palsy or related birth injury in a New York City area hospital, call a birth injury litigation attorney at Rosenbaum & Rosenbaum, P.C., in Manhattan for a free case evaluation.
